Questions
What people ask before they book
Does acupuncture hurt?
Most people feel a light tap or a brief pinch where a needle goes in, then a dull ache, warmth or nothing much at all, and many feel relaxed. If anything is uncomfortable, tell Pushpa and she will adjust or remove the needle.
Are the needles clean?
Yes. Needles are sterile, hair-thin and single-use. Pushpa opens each one in front of you and discards it in a sharps container after the visit.
Do you put needles in my face?
Only if you choose facial acupuncture, which is its own visit with Pushpa and uses very fine needles at points on the face, neck, hands and body. A gua sha facial, a custom facial and facial massage use no needles at all.
What is gua sha, and does it hurt?
Gua sha is a massage with a smooth stone. In a facial, Astrid uses warm oil and light, slow strokes. You should feel gentle pressure, and you can ask for lighter or slower at any time.
How many visits do people plan for?
It varies. Some people come once for a treat or an occasion, and some come every few weeks. After your first visit we suggest a rhythm, and it is always your choice.
Does insurance cover it, and can I use my HSA or FSA?
Facials and other skin care are paid by you. Some health plans reimburse acupuncture, and others don't. We give you an itemized receipt, and your plan decides. For HSA and FSA cards, ask your plan administrator.
What should I wear and eat?
Wear something loose that is easy to move in, and eat a light meal an hour or two beforehand. For a facial, a hair band helps. You will be draped with a towel or sheet, and you choose how much to remove.
Can I come if I am pregnant?
Tell us when you book, or as soon as you know. Pushpa and Astrid will explain what they would change or skip, and may ask you to check with your midwife or doctor first.
Will I have to stop my medicine?
No. Tell your prescriber and Pushpa about everything you take, including anything over the counter and anything you use on your skin. We never ask you to change a medicine.
What does this not do, and when should I see a doctor?
Acupuncture and facials do not replace your doctor's care, and we make no promise about results. See a doctor first for chest pain, trouble breathing, sudden weakness or numbness, a spreading rash or skin that is hot, swollen or painful. In an emergency, call 911.
